Sentinel Real Estate Corporation Selects Riverbed to Improve Productivity With Consolidation Effort

Market Wire, August, 2008

Riverbed Technology (NASDAQ: RVBD), the technology and market leader in wide-area data services (WDS), today announced that Sentinel Real Estate Corporation deployed 150 Steelhead® appliances to support a US-wide IT consolidation effort. As a result, Sentinel employees working in dispersed offices are able to more efficiently collaborate due to the dramatic improvements in application performance.

Sentinel Real Estate Corporation and its affiliates comprise a fully integrated organization that provides real estate investment management services to institutional and qualified private investors in the United States and abroad. Sentinel manages pooled and separate accounts holding diversified portfolios of real estate properties valued at $5 billion. These portfolios include over 156 properties in 29 states, with many types of income-producing properties represented, from multifamily rental properties to office buildings, industrial facilities and shopping centers.

Sentinel has almost 200 dispersed offices across the US, with teams that work on localized projects but need to work securely with geographically dispersed affiliates, such as banks to transmit money transactions between offices. It is difficult for the small IT team of less than ten people to accommodate the needs of the 200 offices running independent systems. The IT team struggled to manage data, compliance and centralization among the dispersed offices. With so many offices and a lack of local IT support, it became important for Sentinel to safeguard its data through an IT consolidation project that transported all data to one data center in New York. "With no technical presence in these dispersed offices, we felt there was a need to better protect our data. The goal of our consolidation effort was to protect data that may be compromised or lost due to natural disasters -- for instance offices in Northern California being hit by a fire," said Emile Rashkovich, Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer at Sentinel.

During its consolidation effort, the IT team received many complaints from users on the slow application performance, which prompted them to look for a solution. Based on research, the team knew that bandwidth and DSL upgrades were too expensive and would not solve the application performance issues.

Sentinel conducted an extensive review process with Brocade, Cisco and Riverbed®. During its evaluation, Sentinel recruited evaluation users, simulated remote offices, conducted testing and analysis of cost performance and determined Riverbed was superior to the alternatives.

"I've paid close attention to the WAN Optimization market and its players since late 2005. I knew that we would benefit from the touted functionality of accelerating application performance over the WAN. So we began our comparison of vendors and selected Riverbed based on its pioneering technology," said Rashkovich.

Since its deployment, Sentinel has obtained up to a 1000 percent performance gain. Employees are now able to download files up to 20X faster than they were prior to implementation of the Steelhead appliances. In addition, the deployment resulted in a dramatic improvement of internal customer satisfaction, and remote office staff productivity.

"Riverbed was more economical in terms of purchasing than some of the biggest names," said Rashkovich. "Even though we are a Cisco shop and I like to keep one company's equipment that's used for similar purposes, this was not feasible in this case. Riverbed was clearly superior to all of its competitors and delivered the best performance, while providing a solid TCO."
